The Role of Social Culture in Shaping Cross-Cultural Communication: Opportunities and Challenges”

BY AINY NUR AMALIA

As more people or groups from different cultures engage with one another in the current globalized society, intercultural communication is becoming more and more crucial. Communication is influenced by social culture, which encompasses a society's norms, values, and rituals. Although these cultural variations can foster greater understanding and collaboration, they can also present difficulties like miscommunication and conflict if not handled well. To ensure successful and peaceful relationships, it is crucial to comprehend how social culture influences cross-cultural communication.

This essay aims to highlight the difficulties that are frequently encountered and how to overcome them, as well as to explain how social culture shapes intercultural communication and the opportunities that result from these contacts. In order to build stronger relationships and lower the likelihood of conflict, it is hoped that people would gain a better understanding of this and enhance their crosscultural communication abilities (Kompas.com, 2022). Fostering tolerance, empathy, and an appreciation of the cultural diversity present in the global community are further benefits of cross-cultural communication (Muhtarom, 2024). This essay will therefore go over the ways in which social culture influences crosscultural communication, the possibilities that can be obtained, the difficulties that are frequently encountered, and how to overcome them.

A society's social and cultural life as a whole is referred to as its social culture. It encompasses the norms, values, language, religion, customs, traditions, and way of life that define the group. In addition to influencing individual behavior, social culture also molds social relationships and interaction patterns within a community. For instance, proper behavior and respect for parents are highly valued in some cultures; therefore, one must demonstrate this regard in both speech and behavior (Anugrah Dwi, 2023). Meanwhile, cross-cultural communication is the process by which people or groups from diverse cultural backgrounds exchange information. Understanding how linguistic, cultural, and value differences impact how individuals communicate and receive messages is part of it. To maintain peace, for instance, people in Asian cultures tend to communicate more subtly and indirectly, while those in Western cultures tend to speak frankly and freely (Umam). When someone from a culture that places a high priority on politeness meets someone from a society that values directness in speech, it's a straightforward illustration of how culture influences communication. While a direct speaker might find someone overly complicated, someone who values civility might find someone disrespectful. In cross-cultural communication, this distinction might cause misconceptions if it is not understood (Nurdien).

A person's communication style is significantly influenced by their social culture. For instance, greeting conventions and practices differ throughout cultures; some stress respect by bending their heads or using more subdued language, while others utilize straightforward greets that involve eye contact (Muchtar, 2016).

The terms "direct" and "indirect" are frequently used to describe these various communication approaches. More straightforward civilizations, like Western cultures, typically place a higher value on honesty and clarity. Messages are communicated implicitly or in a more courteous way in more subtle cultures (indirect communication), which place a higher value on harmony and steer clear of conflict (Fitriawardani, 2023). If there is a lack of cultural awareness between the persons conversing, this discrepancy may lead to misunderstandings (Nuraeni, 2021).

For both people and communities, intercultural contact creates a wealth of beneficial opportunities. Our perspectives are expanded when we gain knowledge about the beliefs, customs, and values of different cultures, which is one of the primary advantages (Santoso, 2020). Understanding cultural differences increases tolerance among others by making us more accepting and appreciative of variety (Rahmawati, 2021).

If handled well, cultural differences within a team can actually work to the team's advantage. Team members with diverse cultural backgrounds, for instance, contribute a range of viewpoints, original ideas, and approaches to problem-solving. As a result, the choices made are more thoughtful and creative (Putra & Lestari, 2019). When these disparities are communicated well, they become assets that improve relationships and foster cooperation rather than obstacles.

Thus, intercultural communication involves using variety to accomplish shared objectives as well as resolving differences (Santoso, 2020).

Intercultural communication is hampered by language barriers, cultural conventions, and preconceptions that frequently result in miscommunication. One of the biggest challenges is language because a word or phrase may signify various things in different cultures, which can lead to misunderstandings. Furthermore, if cultural norms and values are not fully grasped, they can lead to conflicts with things like speech, attire, and emotional expression.

Prejudices and stereotypes are significant barriers to intercultural communication as well. Bias can arise from preconceived notions or inaccurate perceptions of other cultures, which hinder productive communication. Communication style differences, such as less subtle versus more direct cultures, can also produce conflict since different ways of communicating might be interpreted as confused or disrespectful (Ridwan, 2023). Conflicts and miscommunications may arise if these cultural differences are not effectively handled, which eventually makes it more difficult for people or groups from various cultures to cooperate and interact socially. In order to facilitate seamless and peaceful intercultural communication, it is crucial to raise cultural awareness and comprehension (Farhan, 2021).

Techniques for overcoming obstacles in cross-cultural communication include a few easy yet very powerful steps. In order to respect differences and minimize miscommunications, it is first and foremost crucial to learn about and comprehend other cultures. An environment of mutual respect and easy communication can also be fostered by being honest and nonjudgmental. Additionally, it is strongly advised to use plain language to ensure that all parties can understand messages without confusion (Ciputra, 2024).

When speaking with people from diverse cultures, patience and empathy are essential. We attempt to comprehend the thoughts and feelings of the other person by empathizing in order to improve the effectiveness and harmony of communication. Being patient allows us to handle communication style differences and prevents unfavorable reactions that could make things worse. Furthermore, cultural training and diversity education are crucial for improving intercultural communication awareness and proficiency (Ciputra, 2024).

How we interact with individuals from diverse origins is significantly influenced by social culture. We may expand our perspectives and foster peaceful collaboration by embracing differences in customs, behaviors, and communication styles. However, if communication is not well managed, problems including misconceptions, preconceptions, and linguistic difficulties also frequently surface. Understanding other cultures, being open, and prioritizing empathy and patience in communicating are so crucial. By using these techniques, cross-cultural communication can be a bridge that builds successful collaboration and connections.
