English Language and Literature Department Celebrates Its 26th Anniversary

Makassar, May 6, 2025 — The Student Association of the English Language and Literature Department (HMJ BSI) of UIN Alauddin Makassar successfully held the 26th anniversary celebration of the department on Monday, May 6, 2025. The event took place at the Auditorium of Campus II, UIN Alauddin Makassar, and was attended by students, lecturers, and several distinguished guests.

The anniversary celebration, held annually on May 6, gathered a vibrant audience consisting of students from the English Language and Literature Department (BSI) and faculty members. Present to deliver speeches were the Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Prof. Dr. H. Baarsihannor, M.Ag., Vice Dean III for Student Affairs, Dr. Nurkhalis A. Gaffar, S.Ag., M.Hum., and the Head of the English Department, Dr. Rosmah Tami, S.Ag., M.Sc., M.A.. Also in attendance were representatives from the Student Executive Board (DEMA) and the Student Legislative Council (SEMA) of the Faculty.

One of the highlights of the event was the symbolic cutting of the tumpeng, a traditional Indonesian rice cone, to mark the department's 26th year of existence.

This year’s 26th anniversary celebration carried the theme “Harmonia Eternal.” The theme was chosen to reflect the enduring spirit of unity amid the ever-changing times. Etymologically, “harmonia” signifies harmony or a complete fusion, while “eternal” denotes timelessness and perpetuity. Through this theme, the department aspires to foster a lasting bond among all members of the academic community—one that is sustained by collaboration, continuity, and mutual respect.

This year’s celebration was made even more meaningful with a Linguistics Seminar carrying the theme: “Rethinking English: Assumed Opportunities and Local Challenges in the Digital Age.” The seminar sparked insightful discussions among participants and served as an academic reflection on the evolving role of the English language in the modern world, especially in local and digital contexts.

In addition to the seminar, a series of commemorative activities were planned, including an essay competition and a cultural performance night, which are scheduled to take place following the main event.

Despite the financial challenges faced—namely the absence of funding support from the university—the HMJ BSI received wide praise for its dedication and initiative in organizing the celebration. The success of the event is a testament to the students’ strong commitment and collaborative spirit in honoring their department's legacy.
